How Our Technicians Approach AC Compressor Diagnosis
When a vehicle arrives with a suspected compressor fault, we begin with gauge readings to determine system pressure on both sides. Low high-side pressure combined with normal or elevated low-side pressure is the classic indicator of a compressor not pumping.
We test clutch engagement by verifying the clutch coil is receiving correct voltage and confirming the clutch plate is engaging fully when commanded. A clutch that does not engage with correct voltage points to a mechanical clutch fault. One that does not receive voltage points to a pressure switch, relay, or wiring fault.
We inspect the compressor for external oil leaks at the shaft seal, which indicate internal lubrication loss. We check the drive belt for wear patterns indicating a bearing fault. We review high-side and low-side pressure behavior while the compressor runs to assess internal pumping efficiency.
Before recommending replacement, we confirm whether the failure is clutch-only or involves internal components, since clutch-only failures sometimes allow the compressor body to be retained while replacing only the clutch assembly.
