How Our Technicians Approach Exhaust Diagnosis
When a vehicle arrives with an exhaust complaint, we raise it on the lift and walk the exhaust system from the manifold at the engine through every section to the tailpipe, examining each hanger, flange, flex joint, catalytic converter, and muffler for signs of rust-through, cracking, separation, or impact damage.
For complaints involving an exhaust smell inside the cabin or a smog test failure with elevated emissions, we perform a smoke or pressure test to locate leaks that may not be visible during a visual inspection. Even a small gap at a flange can allow enough exhaust gas to enter the cabin or affect emissions test readings.
We retrieve any stored fault codes related to oxygen sensors or catalytic converter efficiency and cross-reference them with our physical inspection findings. For smog failure cases, we review the specific failure certificate readings to ensure we address the actual cause of the failure rather than guessing at components.
Once the inspection is complete, we present our findings in plain language with a clear explanation of what needs to be repaired and why, before any work begins.
