How Our Technicians Approach Electrical Diagnosis
When a vehicle arrives with an electrical complaint, we start by gathering a thorough description of the symptoms: when they occur, how long the problem has been present, and what conditions seem to trigger it. An intermittent fault that only appears when the vehicle is cold tells us something very different from one that appears only after an hour of driving.
We connect our professional-grade scan tool and pull fault codes from every module in the vehicle: ABS, airbag, body control, and all accessible systems, not just the engine computer. We record every active and stored code along with associated freeze frame data that captures the operating conditions when each fault was detected.
With a complete code picture, we develop a test plan based on the specific codes and customer symptoms. For battery and charging complaints, we perform voltage drop testing at the battery, alternator output testing under load, and circuit resistance testing at key points. For parasitic draw complaints, we connect a clamp ammeter to monitor current draw while systematically pulling fuses to isolate the responsible circuit. For wiring faults, we use the vehicle’s wiring diagram to map the affected circuit and test continuity, resistance, and signal quality at each point.
Once the root cause is confirmed, we present our findings with a clear explanation of what failed, why, and what the repair involves before any work begins.
