How Our Technicians Approach Cooling System Diagnosis
When a vehicle arrives with a cooling complaint, we start with the coolant itself: checking the level and examining its color and condition. Coolant that is heavily discolored or contaminated tells us the system has been neglected past its service interval. Low coolant level leads directly to a pressure test.
We pressure-test the system using a hand pump tester connected to the radiator filler neck. We bring the system to its specified operating pressure and hold it for several minutes while inspecting every connection, hose, the radiator, water pump housing, and accessible engine block surfaces for any sign of leakage.
We then monitor engine coolant temperature during warm-up to verify thermostat operation. We watch how quickly the engine reaches operating temperature and whether it holds steady in the normal range or continues to climb.
We test the radiator cap separately using a cap adapter to confirm it holds the correct pressure rating. We inspect all hoses by feel, checking for soft spots and internal erosion. We check the water pump for weep hole leakage and bearing noise, and evaluate radiator flow by measuring the temperature differential across the radiator inlet and outlet hoses.
Once the evaluation is complete, we present our findings with a clear explanation of what we found and what each recommended service involves before any work begins.
