How Our Technicians Approach Radiator Service
When a cooling complaint is suspected to involve the radiator, we examine the external condition first, looking for wetness, staining, and corrosion at the tanks, seams, and connections. We check the coolant level and condition in the reservoir.
We then pressure-test the system, bringing it to the specified operating pressure and holding it while inspecting every component for leakage. This test finds leaks that are not dripping at rest but open under system pressure.
We test the radiator cap separately with a cap adapter to confirm it holds correct pressure. We evaluate radiator flow by measuring the temperature differential between the upper and lower radiator hoses with the engine at operating temperature. A radiator with significant internal restriction shows an unusually large temperature drop, indicating coolant is not flowing through efficiently enough to dissipate heat.
Once the inspection is complete, we present our findings with a clear explanation of what we found and what service we recommend before any work begins.
