Signs Your Vehicle Needs This Service

  • Check engine light with a P0420 or P0430 catalytic converter efficiency code: these codes indicate the downstream oxygen sensor is not seeing the reduction in exhaust oxygen variation that a correctly functioning converter produces
  • California smog test failure due to elevated hydrocarbon or carbon monoxide readings at the tailpipe: when the converter is not converting pollutants effectively, emissions exceed the California standard
  • Significant loss of engine power combined with a sulfur or rotten egg smell from the exhaust: a converter that has melted internally or become blocked restricts exhaust flow and produces a sulfur smell indicating overheating or contamination
  • Rattling sound from underneath the vehicle near the catalytic converter location at idle that changes character with RPM: indicates the internal ceramic substrate has cracked and broken apart inside the housing
  • Vehicle with a history of running excessively rich, using oil, or having had a significant misfiring event: these conditions send unburned fuel into the exhaust where it ignites inside the converter, causing overheating that damages the substrate

Pre-Replacement Exhaust Leak and Oxygen Sensor Test

Pre-Replacement Exhaust Leak and Oxygen Sensor Test

Before recommending catalytic converter replacement, we test for exhaust leaks upstream of the downstream oxygen sensor using a smoke test and inspect oxygen sensor condition and waveform output to rule out false P0420 codes.

Catalytic Converter Efficiency Analysis

Catalytic Converter Efficiency Analysis

We observe both upstream and downstream oxygen sensor waveforms simultaneously while the engine runs at operating temperature. A functioning converter significantly dampens downstream sensor variation; a failing converter does not.

Catalytic Converter Replacement

Catalytic Converter Replacement

We replace failed catalytic converters with quality California-compliant units that meet the emissions standards required for California vehicles. A California-compliant converter is required to pass a California smog inspection.

Post-Replacement Monitor Completion Guidance

Post-Replacement Monitor Completion Guidance

After converter replacement, the catalytic converter readiness monitor must complete a drive cycle before the vehicle will pass a smog inspection. We advise on the specific driving conditions needed to complete the monitor.

What to Expect: Typical Service Times

  • Pre-replacement exhaust leak and sensor testing: 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Catalytic converter replacement: 2 to 4 hours depending on vehicle and converter location

How Our Technicians Approach Catalytic Converter Diagnosis

When a P0420 or P0430 code arrives, we begin by testing for exhaust leaks upstream of the downstream oxygen sensor. A leak in this location dilutes the exhaust reaching the sensor and can produce a P0420 code while the converter itself is still functioning adequately.

We then analyze upstream and downstream oxygen sensor waveforms simultaneously. A downstream sensor that mirrors the upstream sensor’s switching pattern indicates a converter that is no longer processing exhaust gases. A downstream sensor that shows significantly less variation than the upstream sensor confirms the converter is still functioning.

If the converter is confirmed to be failing, we verify the root cause of the failure where possible, such as an oil-burning condition or a previous misfire event, to advise the customer on whether that condition should be addressed to protect the new converter.
