What to Expect: Typical Service Times
- Pre-replacement exhaust leak and sensor testing: 1 to 1.5 hours
- Catalytic converter replacement: 2 to 4 hours depending on vehicle and converter location
How Our Technicians Approach Catalytic Converter Diagnosis
When a P0420 or P0430 code arrives, we begin by testing for exhaust leaks upstream of the downstream oxygen sensor. A leak in this location dilutes the exhaust reaching the sensor and can produce a P0420 code while the converter itself is still functioning adequately.
We then analyze upstream and downstream oxygen sensor waveforms simultaneously. A downstream sensor that mirrors the upstream sensor’s switching pattern indicates a converter that is no longer processing exhaust gases. A downstream sensor that shows significantly less variation than the upstream sensor confirms the converter is still functioning.
If the converter is confirmed to be failing, we verify the root cause of the failure where possible, such as an oil-burning condition or a previous misfire event, to advise the customer on whether that condition should be addressed to protect the new converter.
