Signs Your Vehicle Needs This Service

  • New or increased exhaust noise that appeared suddenly or has gradually worsened: a sudden new sound most commonly indicates a component that has broken, separated, or rusted through
  • Exhaust smell inside the passenger cabin while driving: any exhaust odor inside the vehicle indicates combustion gases are entering through a leak and warrants immediate attention
  • California smog test failure due to elevated emissions or a catalytic converter efficiency code: the actual cause may be the converter, an oxygen sensor, or an exhaust leak affecting sensor readings
  • Visible rust, holes, or physical damage anywhere on the visible exhaust components: external rust-through has usually progressed further internally and surrounding sections should be evaluated
  • Rattling sound from underneath the vehicle that changes with road surface but not with engine RPM: typically indicates a loose heat shield, broken exhaust hanger, or pipe contacting the floor or body

Exhaust System Inspection

Full Visual Inspection from Manifold to Tailpipe

Full Visual Inspection from Manifold to Tailpipe

We raise the vehicle on a lift and walk the entire exhaust system, examining every component for rust-through, cracks, holes, separated joints, broken hangers, heat shield damage, and physical contact with the body or floor.

Smoke and Pressure Leak Test

Smoke and Pressure Leak Test

When an exhaust leak is suspected but not immediately visible, we perform a smoke or pressure test to reveal leak points at flanges, flex joints, and sections where rust damage may have created small holes not obvious visually.

Exhaust Manifold and Gasket Inspection

Exhaust Manifold and Gasket Inspection

We inspect the exhaust manifold and gasket sealing at the cylinder head, looking for cracks, heat discoloration around joints, and gasket seepage that can contribute to exhaust smells, noise, and emissions issues.

Catalytic Converter Condition Assessment

Catalytic Converter Condition Assessment

We evaluate catalytic converter condition as part of every exhaust inspection using both visual examination and oxygen sensor data analysis to assess efficiency, noting any impact damage, substrate rattling, or thermal damage.

Hanger and Support Inspection

Hanger and Support Inspection

We inspect every exhaust hanger for cracking, separation, and fatigue, and confirm that the system hangs correctly without contacting any body or floor surfaces at any point.

What to Expect: Typical Service Times

  • Full visual exhaust system inspection: 30 to 45 minutes
  • Smoke or pressure leak test: 30 to 45 minutes
  • Complete exhaust system inspection with leak test: 1 to 1.5 hours

How Our Technicians Approach an Exhaust System Inspection

When a vehicle arrives with an exhaust complaint, we raise it on a lift and walk the system from the manifold to the tailpipe. We examine every connection point, hanger, and pipe section visually, looking for obvious rust-through, separated joints, and broken hangers.

For exhaust smell complaints inside the cabin, we perform a smoke test after the visual inspection to locate any leaks that are not immediately obvious, since even small leaks at flange connections can allow enough exhaust gas to enter the cabin to create a detectable odor.

We document every finding we observe during the inspection and present the complete picture to the customer, distinguishing between components requiring immediate repair and components showing early deterioration that can be monitored, before recommending any specific repairs.
