Signs Your Vehicle Needs This Service

  • Sweet or syrupy smell inside the cabin when the heater or defrost is running; this odor is produced by coolant entering the cabin air through a heater core leak
  • Windshield that repeatedly fogs on the inside, particularly on the lower portion, despite defrost running at full force
  • Wet or damp carpet under the dashboard on the passenger side; coolant from a leaking heater core can seep through the HVAC housing and drain onto the carpet
  • Coolant level that drops gradually without any visible external puddle under the vehicle
  • Heater that produces little or no warm air despite the engine reaching full operating temperature and coolant level being correct

Heater Core Service

Heater Core Flow Test

Heater Core Flow Test

We measure the temperature differential between the heater core inlet and outlet hoses with the engine at full operating temperature to assess flow before recommending any service. Similar temperatures at inlet and outlet indicate restriction inside the core.

Heater Core Back-Flush

Heater Core Back-Flush

When the heater core is restricted but not leaking, back-flushing with water pressure applied in reverse through the outlet hose can sometimes clear scale deposits and restore adequate flow. We attempt this before recommending replacement when no leakage is present.

Heater Core Replacement

Heater Core Replacement

When the heater core is confirmed leaking or restricted beyond what flushing can restore, we replace it. Replacement requires removing the dashboard, glove box, console, and HVAC housing on most vehicles. We replace all seals and connections inside the housing while it is open.

HVAC Housing Inspection During Replacement

HVAC Housing Inspection During Replacement

While the HVAC housing is disassembled for heater core access, we inspect the blend door actuators, cabin air filter housing, and evaporator for any conditions that should be addressed while the housing is already open.

What to Expect: Typical Service Times

  • Heater core flow test: 15 to 30 minutes
  • Heater core back-flush attempt: 30 to 60 minutes
  • Heater core replacement: 4 to 8 hours depending on vehicle make and model

How Our Technicians Approach Heater Core Service

When a heater core problem is suspected, we begin by confirming the symptom category. For a suspected leak, we look for the specific combination of sweet smell, interior fogging, and wet carpet. For a suspected restriction, we measure heater core flow by comparing inlet and outlet hose temperatures.

For a confirmed restriction without leak evidence, we attempt a back-flush before recommending replacement, since the back-flush is a straightforward procedure and avoiding heater core replacement saves significant labor cost.

For a confirmed leak, we explain the replacement procedure in full, including the dashboard disassembly required, the approximate labor hours involved, and the components that can be inspected and serviced while the housing is open, before the customer authorizes any work.

Our 2 ASE certified technicians have experience with heater core replacement across a range of domestic and import vehicles and know the dashboard disassembly procedure specific to your make and model. We schedule heater core replacements appropriately for the labor involved and work efficiently to minimize time in the shop.
