How Our Technicians Approach a Heater System Inspection
When a vehicle arrives with a heating complaint, we start by gathering a thorough description of the symptoms. Whether the issue is no heat, reduced heat, no airflow, an odor, or a fogging problem, the specific combination of symptoms narrows the likely cause before any testing begins.
We start with the simplest check: coolant level and condition. We then monitor thermostat operation during a short warm-up. We check heater core flow by measuring inlet and outlet hose temperatures. We test the blower motor at each fan speed and command the actuators through their range.
We document every finding and distinguish between the component that is the primary cause and any secondary conditions that should also be addressed. We then present the complete inspection findings to the customer with a specific repair recommendation and estimate before any work is authorized.
A car heater that stops producing warm air can be caused by half a dozen different faults, each requiring a completely different repair: a thermostat stuck open, a partially restricted heater core, a failed blower motor, a seized blend door actuator, low coolant, or a coolant temperature sensor reading incorrectly. At APS Automotive, we do not assume a cause and start replacing parts. Our 2 ASE certified technicians test each component in sequence before recommending any repair.
