What to Expect: Typical Service Times
- Code and freeze frame retrieval with priority analysis: 30 to 60 minutes
- Targeted system testing based on OBD-II findings: 1 to 3 hours depending on system and fault type
- Smog-related code diagnosis: 1 to 2 hours
How Our Technicians Approach OBD-II Check Engine Diagnosis
When a check engine light arrives, we retrieve all code categories and review the freeze frame data for each stored code. We note the coolant temperature, load value, fuel trim data, RPM, and vehicle speed captured in each freeze frame, which tells us the specific engine operating state when each fault was detected.
We analyze the code list and freeze frame together to develop a test sequence. For a misfire code with freeze frame showing the fault at a specific RPM under load, we test the ignition system at that cylinder under those conditions. For an oxygen sensor code with freeze frame showing the fault at operating temperature during steady cruise, we analyze sensor waveform behavior under those specific conditions.
Once the root cause is confirmed through targeted testing, we explain the OBD-II code, what the system was monitoring, how we confirmed the cause, and what the repair requires in plain language before any work is authorized.
